Wow great to see MR is heading towards a great start and a win…I feel sorry for people who vote for SF, who didn’t even have a vote from 2005. So that means after he got his green card, he wasn’t bothered. He betrayed all of his supporting parties. I think JVP had their hara kiri…Go Mahinda gooooooooooo

Expert Comments: In 2005, Mahinda Rajapaksa obtained 6,697 (63.4%) out of 10,550 while Ranil Wickramasinghe obtained 3,800 (36.0%). So, MR has obtained 2,761 more vote than in 2005. But, Opposition (Sarath Fonseka) has only managed to obtained 343 more votes. Does this an indicator of government servants not falling for SF’s Rs.10,000 salary increase??

Expert Comment: In 2005, Mahinda Rajapaksa obtained 5,790 (63.62%) out of 9,101 valid votes in Monaragala. Opposition (RW) received 3,270 (35.93%). This year, MR received 8,871 (69.79%) and SF received 3,795 (29.84%). MR has received 3,081 more votes than in 2005 while opposition (SF) has only managed to get 525 more results. It seems to be government sector is rejecting SF promises in a much larger way than any of us would have anticipated.

Don’t celebrate too early. More than 14 million people are elligible to vote. About 70% went to the polls. That’s roughly 10 million people who voted. Simple math suggests that the winner needs more than 5 million votes to win. Right now MR has less than one-quarter of one percent of the votes he needs. Projections are never made on the basis of less than 25% of the total votes. When the vote count reaches about three million and MR is still ahead by a sizeable margin, then you can think about lighting your firecrackers. Until then, good night Sri Lanka.

Hello From Europe – I do not want to interfere but I would like to give my non-aligned comments – now the voting has finished … Thank you
I must say I mightily impressed with the website – clear concise layout – easy to navigate as as Chrome user easy to use.
To business, I must say from afar the whole election has been highly entertaining. I think now it time for SL to take its rightful self-determined role on the international stage. I believe that MR is the only President who can do that. He has shown self-determination on the global political arena, played and won some political poker and acts as the President of SL should – with the benefit of SL on his agenda.
I don’t think this is an appropriate time for a president to “cut his teeth”, so to speak, in the complexity of global politics and global economics. So SF would not get my vote – he is not yet a politician – he is on a learning curve.
SL has a 2-3 window of opportunity to get its act together and really boom – for that you need a politically aware guy who can weave SL through the global politics – compromising here gaining alliance there to let SL become what is destined to be … a TRULY GREAT PLACE
Thanks for the site and I hope the best man wins
Bye from Europe

I agree with Dias. Mahinda should end up with 65-70%. Ponseka and Ponna Ranil will end up with about 30-35%. Good lesson for the JVP idiots too. Ponna Ranil would have created a world record for the number of election defeats since he became UNP leader

Rod, Galle is a city in Southern part of Sri Lanka and has been a UNP seat since long. However, during last provincial council UPFP won the seat with quite a high majority. This was probably due to the fact that the turn out was quite low. Furthermore, Galle has a quite high percentage of Muslims settled down and they are supposed to hard core UNP voters.

What is clear from this election is that Sri Lanka is still a divided nation. If MR wants to leave a positive legacy he must focus on the Tamil problem he has created by abandoning all political solutions and resorting to war. If he does not improve the relations with the Tamil people the next group to rise up will make the Tigers look like pussy cats.

The election results have confirmed that basically Sri Lankans r intelligent.
As the financial analysts rightly said it was a choice between corruption & chaos!
And what a chaos it would have been with the unthinkable alliance of UNP, JVP & TNA & finally CBK! Add to that the fact that SF is a military man who is used to giving orders & being obeyed without question and the wonderful constitution formulated by great UNP minds which would have made him king of kings especially as he had no party to be accountable to. What a scenario! I wonder which party would have remained to support him had he won?

Hi All,
It’s been an exhausting continuous 20+ hours for the team. But, we enjoyed every bit of action. As you may have noticed we experienced few technical hick-ups towards the latter part of the live result updates. However, we made sure the most important result summaries were published accurately and efficiently. We are just about to wind up the show and please send us your feed back. Tomorrow we will publish a post-election analysis including pre-poll results vs actual results comparison.
Until then, it is good bye from The SL Election 2010 Team.
